Tribute to a Hero Who Preached & Practiced
Last week, I read the news I had dreaded. The legendary voice actor, Mr Peter Cullen, died peacefully at his Los Angeles home at the age of 85, surrounded by his loved ones. The news left me teary and unexpectedly low as the long weekend began.
Mr Cullen voiced so many iconic characters, like Eeyore, the depressed donkey from Winnie the Pooh; Ironhide, the Autobots' weapons specialist; KARR, the evil prototype car from Knight Rider; the vocal effects of the Predator; Monty from Chip 'n Dale; Thaedus from Invincible; and many other cartoon characters. But my favourite to date remains the leader of the Autobots in Transformers.
Optimus Prime came into my life during a difficult phase when things looked hopeless. The existence of someone like him, even a fictional someone, gave me hope and strength to face the odds.
For me, Optimus Prime is the epitome of dedicated and compassionate leadership. He was courageous, kind and selfless. The character alone gave me a sense of comfort and faith that things could eventually be made right. His dialogue, “In any war, there are calms between storms. There will be days when we lose faith... but the day will never come that we forsake this planet and its people,” gave me a strange sense of security, even though I knew it was all fiction. Transformers wasn't just a movie or a franchise; it was cinema!! It either breaks you or heals you.
To me, Optimus had more humanity than the collective human race. He would never back out of fighting Megatron and the Dinobots, even when the odds weren't in his favour. He would put his life on the line for another species from another planet in a heartbeat, for the greater good. He is bigger than The Avengers and Marvel put together!
From the day I watched the first Transformers movie, I had this fantasy of saving the world from evil forces. It didn't matter if the world knew about it.
I still wish to have a yellow Chevrolet Camaro in my parking lot that takes me to meet its leader. Then, as I am trying to grasp the situation, a red-and-blue truck pulls in, transforms into a giant robot and leans down to say in a warm and controlled voice, “My name is Optimus Prime. We are autonomous robotic organisms from the planet Cybertron, and we need your help.”
On multiple occasions, I have imagined meeting Mr Cullen and telling him how deeply he impacted my teenage years and how much positivity I drew from the fictional character. I was never sure whether to thank him or his older brother Larry, who inspired Prime's voice. Larry told him to be strong enough to be gentle as a leader. And that's exactly what Mr Cullen delivered for more than four decades: strength without cruelty and leadership with compassion.
I loved watching Mr Cullen's interviews and interactions because he often shared anecdotes about what inspired the characters' voices. But it wasn't just his voice that stayed with me. His personality had an effect too. He had a warmth that could light up a room and leave an audience completely fixated on him.
He also had boundaries most actors in his position wouldn't bother holding. He was once offered a cameo voicing Optimus Prime on Robot Chicken and turned it down. He took the character too seriously to let him be the punchline of a joke, and the show's own crew respected that enough to let it go. In December 2023, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children's and Family Emmys, presented by his longtime co-star Frank Welker, Megatron himself. He wore it all lightly. That's rare.
I'd like to believe Mr Cullen knew the impact he had on generations of children across the globe by voicing one of the strongest characters ever created. He left a mark far greater than he probably realised. Mr Cullen wasn't just a voice actor. He was a part of childhood for so many children who have now grown into adults but still adore his characters and wouldn't mind going back to them.
Even after receiving accolades for his work, he seemed to remain grounded. He absorbed his characters without ever letting success make him larger than the people around him. Very few artists can hold on to that kind of humility after achieving such a remarkable career. I guess that's why his legacy lives on in the hearts of those children who grew up watching his work. “There is more to this planet than meets the eye.” He simply lived that line and, through Optimus Prime, subtly asked his audience to remain hopeful. Where does the character end and the actor begins? That stands true for him!
Now, the noble leader of the Autobots has fallen silent, and the torch will be passed down to someone else. I will listen to the audio, “I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to any surviving Autobots taking refuge among the stars: We are here. We are waiting,” whenever I miss him. I think Bumblebee would be the saddest being to lose his leader.
His admirers will keep fighting the noblest fights. We will lament his absence. But we know this isn't his end. But merely a new beginning. Simply put, another transformation. Just like Prime said.
And because I can't meet him, I would like to send this message to the universe and hope it finds its way to him.
Mr Peter Cullen, it was a complete privilege to witness your art, dedication and grandeur. Optimus Prime was a ray of hope in my life during some of my darkest times, and I am thankful to you for choosing to play him. No matter what, you will always remain THE Optimus Prime for me, a friend I never met, who taught me to choose optimism and courage.
Until next time, to paraphrase Prime a little
Calling all Autobots! Remember, freedom is the right of all sentient beings. Our leader has fallen, but his legacy and ideology live within us and in the generations that follow. Hold on to your dreams. The future is built on dreams. Autobots transform and roll out!
Hugs
We are all in this together. We are one.
